Timpani, or timpani, are a type of percussion instrument. Large drums mainly made of copper, with hemispherical bodies and legs, their skin-covered tops are usually struck with 2 mallets. They are drums, but whereas ordinary drums have many noninteger harmonic components, making definite pitches difficult to hear, timpani have clearly audible pitches.
