An appoggiatura is a musical ornament placed immediately before the note it embellishes. Characteristically, its duration is not fixed and depends on the circumstances. An appoggiatura, also called a leaning note (ion), is placed on a strong beat and resolves by a second into a chord tone. Also called a free suspension.
