In 1983, Rubbia's research team accomplished a discovery of the century, finding 2 new types of elementary particle called “W bosons and Z bosons.” The greatest discovery of his life, it was a feat revolutionizing not only his career but science as a whole. Yet perhaps not many people know what W and Z bosons are. These elementary particles control the internal processes of stars such as the Sun. This is the world inside atomic nuclei, the smallest constituents of matter, at an ultramicroscopic scale smaller than one quadrillionth (10−15) of a meter. one quadrillionth corresponds to the diameter of a hair if the distance from Earth to the Sun is taken as 1. Theoretical physics holds that everything in the universe (including human bodies) is governed by 4 fundamental interactions (forces acting between 2 or more objects). The 1st is probably the best-known electromagnetic force, mediated by elementary particles called photons. The 2nd is gravity, an attractive force acting between all matter possessing energy and mass, but its details have not yet been explained. The 3rd is the strong interaction, mediated by elementary particles called gluons. Stronger than the electromagnetic force, they are named for binding elementary particles together like glue to form protons, neutrons, atomic nuclei, and so on. The 4th is the weak interaction, key to explaining mysteries such as “Why are elements like uranium radioactive?” and “How does the series of nuclear reactions producing the Sun's heat and light begin?” The elementary particles mediating this weak interaction are the W and Z bosons.
