Taylor–Couette flow is a fluid phenomenon arising when the inner cylinder rotates in the gap between concentric cylinders. At low speeds it is simple annular flow (laminar flow), but increased rotation generates axially periodic ring-shaped vortex rows called “Taylor vortices” through centrifugal instability; at still higher speeds it becomes turbulent, making it a classic, important fluid-dynamics phenomenon.
