Oulipo is a literary group established on November 24, 1960, at the initiative of mathematician François Le Lionnais (French version). Its full name is “Ouvroir de littérature potentielle” (Workshop of Potential Literature). Taking the literature of Alfred Jarry, Raymond Queneau, Raymond Roussel, and others as its ideal, it pursued new literary possibilities through the development of language-play techniques. It is characterized by encouraging texts to proliferate themselves by mechanically and mathematically transforming and altering quoted texts, and is strongly influenced by Surrealism's “exquisite corpse.”
