“Biogenic Timestamp” project 2010– https://www.ntticc.or.jp/en/archive/works/biogenic-timestamp-project/ IWASAKI Hideo + Oron CATTS + Juan M. CASTRO Cyanobacteria are photosynthetic bacteria that grow by absorbing metals and minerals dissolved from substrates. They slowly promote the biological deposition of such minerals, transforming landscapes. “Biogenic Timestamp” is a project investigating the relationship between geological time and biological time. Drawing on the breadth of time-based artistic practices and new developments in synthetic biology, we explore different aspects of the material expression of temporality and arrangement, studying cyanobacteria as model organisms. The concept of time (and its manipulation) embodied by cyanobacteria and their by-products offers fertile ground for exploring various modes of time-based artistic practice. This project includes artistic research at several sites of biological and biogenic-geological significance, and laboratory work exploring possibilities for human-induced biogenesis. Considering biogenic structures of geological and anthropogenic origins, our artistic research offers alternative uses and critical interpretations of synthetic biology.
