While affirming technology as a “progressive force,” Takaaki Yoshimoto discerned that it was moving toward “nullifying (flattening)” human sensibility, time, and space. He saw information society and electronic technology as opportunities to create independent individuals who no longer need to rely on physical collective fantasies (such as nations or religions). The direction of technology as interpreted by Takaaki Yoshimoto. Images and the nullification of time. Using images from artificial satellites (Landsat), among other examples, he noted that technology has a gaze that instantly erases the “temporal and spatial thickness” of Earth’s surface and the distinction between “inside and outside.” He predicted an age when everything would be flattened into images and information. Liberation from collective fantasy and the expansion of self-fantasy. Digital information technology dilutes external grand narratives (collective fantasies) such as nations and organizations. Consequently, he foresaw a future in which individuals would be liberated while becoming more prone to shutting themselves within their own worldviews (self-fantasies). Absolute trust in science and technology. Partly informed by his scientific background (Department of Electrochemistry, Tokyo Institute of Technology), he took a pragmatic position on issues including environmental problems and nuclear power, maintaining that “the direction of science and technology itself cannot be reversed” and that they should ultimately be resolved through the power of technology.
