https://anthology.rhizome.org/re-move “Re‐move,” by the pseudonymous artist Lia, allows users to manipulate a series of generative video works balancing organic forms and the rawness of fin-de-siècle Viennese abstraction. Created in Macromedia Director, the work was newly restored as part of the Net Art Anthology. Each work in Re‐move finds its own balance among the artist’s formal choices, user interaction, chance, and algorithmic processes. They therefore convey the idea that the computer is an interplay of different processes rather than an artistic tool in the conventional sense. By balancing responsiveness, randomness, and repetition, the generated, evolving abstractions ensure that the underlying processes shaping them remain legible despite their complexity.
