is a framework for analyzing and predicting media’s (technology’s) effects on society and humans from 4 aspects. Effects arising when introducing technologies or artifacts are organized through the following 4 questions.
Enhancement: What does it expand, enhance, or accelerate? (Example: Cars extend and enhance the function of feet.)
Obsolescence: What does it render outdated and cause to decline? (Example: Cars cause walking and horse-drawn carriages to decline.)
Retrieval: what from the past does it recover or revive? (Example: the car retrieves the lost freedom of individual movement.)
Reversal: when pushed to its limit, what does it reverse into? (Example: excesses of a car-based society, such as traffic congestion, deprive people of freedom of movement and reverse into a state “slower than walking.”) These 4 elements do not oppose one another but function as “laws of media” acting simultaneously on one another. Details are explained at length in McLuhan’s book “Laws of Media.”
