The “monolith” in “2001: A Space Odyssey” is a mysterious black slab that appears at turning points in humanity's evolution and awakening. Functioning as a tool or information terminal of extraterrestrial intelligent life, it gave apes the intelligence to use tools, and the excavation of one buried on the Moon prompted humanity's expansion into space. The monolith's main appearances and roles: The Dawn of Man (about 4 million years ago): It suddenly appears before starving apemen. Waves emitted by the monolith awaken their “wisdom to use tools” and “fighting spirit.” The lunar surface (the 2000s): It is excavated at the lunar Clavius base as the “Tycho Magnetic Anomaly.” Humanity's touching it and its emission of a signal beyond the solar system trigger the story. Near Jupiter (the Discovery): In the final phase of the Jupiter exploration, it appears before the protagonist, Captain Bowman, as a doorway in space and leads him into an unknown dimension. The monolith's shape and characteristics: The mystery of its proportions: It is a distinctive geometric body whose length, width, and height are precisely in the ratio \(1:4:9\) (the squares of 1, 2, and 3 respectively). Physical properties: Its surface is completely jet black, with a texture that seems to absorb its surroundings. It is an artificially created, extremely advanced tool and has no ego or will of its own.
