Born in Nagoya in 1936, Shusaku Arakawa abandoned his artistic activities in Tokyo and moved to New York in 1961, “a little farther away.” Working from Yoko Ono's studio, through exchanges with many artists including Marcel Duchamp he met poet Madeline Gins (1941–2014), who became his partner. The problem they addressed was <What is meaning?> We are always <feeling/thinking> something, but much of this concerns <meaning> mediated by <words>. The 2 undertook an exhaustive investigation of that <meaning>. After 25 years, the result, completed as an ongoing project, was “The Mechanism of Meaning.” The work comprises 81 large two-dimensional works and 44 drawings, together with photographs and models, for a total of 127 pieces. On this occasion, when a major series that can be called their life's work is presented in its entirety, why not go a little further, beyond the meaning of seeing?
