Information Closure / Informational Closure refers, in discussions of systems, networks, or logical frameworks, to a property or state in which information circulates only within a particular boundary and is completely cut off from the outside, or in which new information from outside does not change its state. Its usage and nuances differ by field. The main 3 contexts and their formulations are as follows. 1. Information closure in systems theory and cybernetics. In biological systems and complex systems science, it is treated as a property necessary for a system to maintain itself. Self-referentiality: rather than receiving raw external data as it is, a system transforms and processes information according to its own internal rules. Boundary with the environment: a state in which, even when physically influenced by the external environment, the processing of information (meaning and interpretation) is completed within the system (a concept close to autopoiesis theory). 2. Information closure in cognitive science and sociology. Used to explain cognitive distortions in individuals or groups, or social phenomena. Echo chamber phenomenon: a state in which only opinions and information matching one’s own circulate, and the exclusion of dissent reinforces particular beliefs. Cognitive closedness: a psychological tendency to reject objective external facts or counterevidence and attempt to explain everything in the world solely through internal logic. 3. Information closure in computer science and logic. A rigorous concept used in rules of data processing and inference. Closure of operations: the property that when particular operations or inferences are performed on information in a set, the resulting new information is necessarily also contained in the same set.
1. Information Closure Theory of Consciousness (neuroscience/cognitive science): A hypothesis proposed by neuroscientist Ryota Kanai and others explaining the mechanism of consciousness through information theory. Essence: Consciousness arises when information from the external environment, past memories, and so on is separated within a system (such as the brain) by a particular boundary (information closure), forming a self-contained whole. Non-Trivial Information Closure (NTIC): The theory's central concept, referring to a state where information processing inside the system is independent of the outside world and involves complex information integration (nontrivial loops or processing). Systems with nonzero NTIC are assumed to possess consciousness.
