[Noun] (sonata) A form of composition developing separately from sung (cantata) pieces after the early Baroque in the mid-sixteenth century. In principle, an instrumental solo or chamber work of absolute music without a programmatic title, comprising two or more movements. Many types exist depending on the piece or school. Sonata.
