The carrier wave is a concept used in communications and signal processing. Viewed as a physical wave, a carrier wave is a fundamental high-frequency wave for carrying other information. By modulating data or information, this wave is converted into a signal carrying information. In other words, the carrier wave itself contains no information; its waveform functions as a “carrier” transmitting other signals. For example, in radio broadcasting, television broadcasting, and wireless communications, information such as sound and images is modulated onto a carrier wave and propagates through the air. At the receiving end, the original information can be extracted by demodulating the carrier wave. Carrier waves are normally high-frequency, with wavelengths chosen according to the bandwidth required to carry information. Because high frequencies allow efficient information transmission, many communication systems choose high frequencies for their carrier waves. Carrier waves are also sometimes used as basic sounds in speech and music synthesis. In FM synthesis, combinations of carrier and modulator waves generate complex timbres.
