It is often said that “Einstein's letter to President Roosevelt urging him to build an atomic bomb was the starting point for nuclear-weapons production.” However, the course of events from the delivery of this letter to the president to the Manhattan Project's actual development and production of atomic bombs was not so simple. Accurately understanding this course is an important contemporary issue for drawing correct lessons about the relationships between science and politics, and scientists and politicians.
「アインシュタインが原爆を作るようにルーズベルト大統領に手紙を出したことが、核兵器製造の発端だった」とよく言われます。しかし、この手紙が大統領に届けられてから実際の原爆開発・製造のマンハッタン計画につながる経緯は、それほど単純ではありませんでした。この経緯を正確に捉えることは、科学と政治、科学者と政治家の関係についての正しい教訓を引き出すためにも大事な、今日的な問題です。
