Toroidal field coils – ATOMICA – Devices confining plasma in a doughnut shape are called toroidal magnetic-field devices, of which the tokamak is representative. In these toroidal devices, the major circumference (the direction around the doughnut's ring) is called the toroidal direction and the minor circumference the poloidal direction; their respective magnetic fields are called toroidal and poloidal magnetic fields.
