At the University of Paris's Nanterre campus, newly established in 1963 in the Paris suburbs, New Left students staged an occupation in March 1968. On May 10 of the same year, New Left students protesting the closure by university authorities gathered in Paris and clashed with police. On May 13, some workers and citizens supporting the New Left students held demonstrations in support of the students, and the turmoil continued until late May. De Gaulle dissolved the National Assembly on May 30 and declared that a general election would be held to gauge public opinion, working to resolve the situation.
