Automatism (French: Automatisme) is a psychological term meaning “muscular automatic action.” It refers to phenomena in which actions occur independently of one's consciousness, as if another being possesses and controls one's body. Writing through automatic action is called automatic writing, automatic scripting, or automatic description.
