Ancestral deity of the Mononobe clan. The Mononobe were a major powerful clan contributing military affairs and rituals to the Yamato court, and traces of them remain in the figure of Nigihayahi-no-Mikoto appearing in traditions of Jimmu's eastern expedition. According to Nihon Shoki, Nigihayahi was a child of a heavenly deity, descending to Yamato aboard the heavenly rock boat before Emperor Jimmu, marrying Nagasunehiko's sister Mikashikiya-hime, and fathering Umashimade-no-Mikoto.
