The “Jomon Venus” is a clay figurine designated a National Treasure, approximately 5000 years old (Middle Jomon period), excavated from the Tanabatake site in Chino, Nagano Prefecture. Characterized by flowing curved beauty depicting a pregnant woman and a heart-shaped face, it was Japan’s first Jomon-period artifact designated a National Treasure. Characteristics and history. Mica (kirara) is mixed into the clay, and its entire body was once painted red.
