Sokal imitated the style of postmodern thinkers to produce a “contentless paper” scattered with scientific terms and formulas, sent it to an academic journal specializing in postmodern thought, and it was accepted and published as it stood. Sokal then revealed that the paper was nonsense, denounced the specialists who published it without seeing through it, and argued that some postmodern thinkers likewise use mathematical and scientific terms nonsensically to give their work authority, just as in his pseudo-paper.
