A nucleotide is a substance consisting of a nucleoside attached to a phosphate group. A nucleoside has a purine or pyrimidine base glycosidically bonded at position 1 of a pentose. It is also a constituent unit of DNA and RNA. Nucleotides link in a chain to form a polynucleotide.
