An orphan receptor is a receptor protein whose ligand has not been identified. Also called an “orphaned receptor.” Analysis of gene sequences revealed many proteins whose amino acid sequences partly resemble known receptor protein families but whose ligands and functions are unknown, hence the name. #bio
