On February 22, 2023 (US time), Google announced that it had succeeded in an experiment in “quantum error correction,” correcting errors in qubits. It said it reduced the error rate in quantum gate operations using an algorithm called a “surface code.” Quantum error correction is essential to creating practical quantum computers.
