LISP is a functional programming language characterized by S-expressions and prefix notation. Development began in autumn 1958, the LISP I manual was written in March 1960, and its first paper was published in April 1960. Among high-level programming languages still in widespread use, LISP is the 3rd oldest after FORTRAN and COBOL. #word
