John McCarthy was an American computer scientist and cognitive scientist. Alongside Marvin Minsky, he was a leading figure in early artificial intelligence research. He first used the term “artificial intelligence” in a proposal submitted in 1955. Inspired by the design of ALGOL, he also developed the programming language LISP and generalized the concept of time-sharing. He enjoyed surfing. #word
