The suprachiasmatic nuclei are a pair of small nuclei immediately above the optic chiasm at the base of the hypothalamic third ventricle, the highest-level center controlling circadian rhythms of physiological phenomena such as sleep, behavior, and endocrine activity in mammals. Their circadian clock serves as a central clock with rhythm-generating abilities absent from other brain regions and peripheral organs. #neuroscience
