Metric modulation is a rhythm-change technique making music sound as though it has switched to another tempo without changing its tempo. It also includes tempo changes relating the preceding and following tempos.
For example, dividing a 16th note into 3 and playing it produces a pseudo-shuffle beat with a different tempo.
