A through-composed song sets each stanza of a poem to a different new melody. Characteristically, dramatic or narrative poems whose content develops are chosen.
Unlike strophic songs, in which each lyrical stanza uses the same melody, through-composed songs are composed continuously without repeating the same melody. In this style, music expresses the development of the poem’s content alongside it; Schubert’s “Erlkönig” is especially famous.
