Franz Schubert was a representative early Romantic composer, known for composing over 600 German lieder. Composed eloquently yet with restraint, without compromising the atmosphere of the poems, his lieder continue to shine like jewels today. Lied means “song” in German and refers to German art songs. Developing since the medieval Minnesänger period, it features not only poems set to melodies but piano accompaniments rich in musical ideas. Many composers have written Lieder, including Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Wolf, Mahler, and R. Strauss. Schubert's lieder texts include many by 8–9 poets such as Goethe, Schiller, Handel, Matthisson, Heine, and Müller. Albums containing Schubert Lieder include the following: Schubert Famous Songs [SHM-CD, Schubert: Lieder Recital.
