Tempo rubato translates as “stolen time,” originally meaning taking part of one note's duration and giving it to another. The overall tempo therefore did not change. From the 19th century onward, this concept degenerated and also came to mean changing tempo flexibly. Notated examples of tempo rubato date back to the 14th century.
