Pali is the language used in the scriptures of Southern Theravada Buddhism (early Buddhism). Although it is sometimes known as the language spoken by the Buddha, it actually became established as the language in which early Buddhist scriptures were written. A type of Indian Prakrit, its grammar is simpler than Sanskrit, and it is said to have been used to convey Buddhist teachings more concisely.
