Born in Colfax, California, United States, he studied at Shasta College, San Francisco State University, and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He then entered the University of California, Berkeley, studied composition with Seymour Shifrin, and earned a master's degree. The teacher who influenced him most, however, was Pandit Pran Nath. Pran Nath was a master of Indian classical vocal music, and La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela were also his students. #person
