UPIC is a computer dedicated to producing electroacoustic sound, created by composer Iannis Xenakis in the 1970s at CEMAMu (now called CCMIX), one of France’s electroacoustic research facilities.
When a line is input using a pen tablet, the vertical axis is treated as pitch and the horizontal axis as time, transforming the line into sound. Changing the line type also changes timbre.
