Concret PH, composed by Iannis Xenakis in 1958, is an approximately two-and-a-half-minute electroacoustic work (musique concrète) created for the Philips Pavilion at the Brussels World’s Fair held that year. Main features and background • Source material: It uses only recordings of burning charcoal, chopped into one-second fragments. • Production methods: Tape splicing, changes in playback speed, and mixing create continuous changes in sound with a granular texture. • Role in the Philips Pavilion: At the pavilion, whose architectural design was undertaken by Le Corbusier, the work was played through 425 loudspeakers as an interlude for visitors entering and leaving, between presentations of Edgard Varèse’s Poème électronique. • Origin of the title: PH derives from the architectural structure of hyperbolic paraboloids (paraboloïdes hyperboliques), while the name also draws on concrete and musique concrète.
