Pelog selisir is one of the most representative and common scales (note series) in traditional gamelan music of Indonesia's Bali and Java islands. A mode formed by extracting chiefly 5 notes (pentatonic) from the 7-note pelog scale, extensively used in “gamelan gong kebyar” and other forms synonymous with Balinese gamelan. Characteristics of Pelog Selisir 5-note scale (pentatonic): Select and play 5 notes from the 7-note pelog system. Structure (approximation): expressed approximately in Western scale terms, it resembles (tonic, minor 2nd, minor 3rd, perfect 5th, minor 6th). Characterized by a melancholy, exotic resonance suggesting a slight resemblance to Japan’s Okinawan (Ryukyuan) scale. Representative instruments: Mainly used in Gamelan Gong Kebyar, and most music tourists hear in Bali is based on this scale. Pitch structure: narrow intervals and wide intervals coexist within 1 octave, producing distinctive fluctuation.
