Optical computing is a technology that processes information at high speed and low power consumption using photons instead of electrons. Ideal for AI matrix operations and quantum computing, it achieves orders-of-magnitude improvements in power efficiency and processing speed (low latency) compared with conventional GPUs. Practical implementation through “photonic-electronic convergence” devices within data centers and computing nodes, including NTT’s IOWN initiative, is progressing rapidly.
