A grating coupler efficiently couples optical fibers with SOI waveguides on silicon substrates. By giving a substrate waveguide a suitable periodic structure resembling a diffraction grating, light incident from an optical fiber is diffracted into the substrate waveguide to couple the light. In grating-coupler design, incident light is a fiber mode, so design must consider the mode distribution. This is addressed by locally modulating diffraction-grating characteristics to match the effective refractive-index distribution and mode distribution (apodization). https://scrapbox.io/files/65d3face6971d40024459169.png #physics
