“Cybernetic Serendipity” was an exhibition organized and held by curator Jasia Reichardt at London’s ICA (Institute of Contemporary Arts) in 1968, pioneering later art using computer technology.
The exhibition title reflects the influence of mathematician Norbert Wiener, who explained automatic control and feedback through “cybernetics” theory in engineering, physiology, and cultural terms. “Serendipity” means “accidentally discovering something unexpected.”
Reichardt assessed the exhibition as combining technology and the pioneering possibilities it opens with the immaturity of technology's reception in art: “It deals with possibilities rather than achievements, and in that sense is premature and optimistic. For so far computers have not revolutionized music, art, or poetry in the same way they have revolutionized science.”
