Video art is an artistic genre dealing with images and sound. It may use video equipment as its display (exhibition/screening) medium and electromagnetic recording media—formerly videotape, now DVDs and the like—for recording. This distinguishes it from works using screens and film. It began in the 1960s; the number of makers grew rapidly from the 1980s, when equipment became cheaper, and since the 1990s it has increasingly been encompassed within media art through to the present.
