nao tokui An installation manifesting potential futures contained within artificial intelligence (AI) trained on large quantities of news articles. While virtual reality (VR) has attracted attention recently, events in the real world that seem to dissolve the boundary between reality and fiction are also not uncommon, as symbolized by terms such as alternative facts and fake news. By generating fictional news that might occur in the near “future” from a probabilistic language model trained on “past” news, this work attempts to illuminate the uncertain “present.” Countless news articles mapped according to semantic distance appear within the 3-dimensional space projected on the screen. New news continually arriving from Twitter is mapped within this 3-dimensional space. Simultaneously, new text = new news is generated from their semantic neighborhoods and the spaces between them and other news. Inspired by AI generating almost infinitely diverse sentences from mere sequences of numbers, this work can be called a process of excavating news that “already is” yet “does not yet exist,” embedded in language models' vast high-dimensional vector spaces, based on news actually happening. Through these news items that “might have been” or “might be possible,” the work unsettles viewers' boundaries between reality and fiction, past and future.
