Laozi's goal of “naturalness through nonaction” (mui shizen) meant following the Way of “nothingness,” abandoning all contrivance, and living naturally. Laozi believed that contrivances such as knowledge, scholarship, desire, technology, morality, and law brought confusion and conflict to society.
