“The Butterfly Dream” (Japanese: kocho no yume) is a tale by thinker Zhuangzi (Zhuang Zhou), born in Meng in the state of Song during China’s Warring States period (present-day Minquan County, Shangqiu, Henan), asking whether one’s dreaming self is real or reality is the dream. It is widely known as a tale prominently expressing Zhuangzi’s thought and as a representative work.
