No traces of the Lower Paleolithic are found in the Basque Country, where human habitation is said to have begun in the Middle Paleolithic approximately 150,000 years ago. Neanderthals lived on outdoor terraces near rivers in warmer periods and sheltered from cold in deep caves during colder periods.
