Nonlinear biology (Japanese reading: hisenkei seibutsugaku) is a branch of nonlinear science covering fields from molecules to species populations. Although it overlaps considerably with mathematical biology, its characteristic may be its active emphasis on the nonlinearity of models1. Prior studies include Alan Turing's theory of morphogenesis using a reaction-diffusion model and Hodgkin and Huxley's action-potential model. The vast accumulated work on nonlinear-network models classified as systems neuroscience could probably also be classified as nonlinear science. The current task in this field is consciously applying general methodologies of nonlinear science proposed by Yoshitsugu Oono and others, such as phenomenology and renormalization, to biological problems; however, because the gap between experiment and theory is deep, Japan has no notable successful examples yet.
