New Academism is a term coined1 by mass media to describe as a social phenomenon the boom in new forms of knowledge outside existing academic frameworks, when works by Akira Asada and Shinichi Nakazawa became bestsellers in the mid-1980s; it has no strict definition. It basically referred to a trend arising alongside the importation into Japan of contemporary Western academic currents such as semiotics, structuralism, poststructuralism, and postmodernism. It is characterized by interdisciplinary thought crossing existing academic divisions, sometimes adopting free expression departing from traditional scholarly argumentation and conventions. Journalism, therefore, rather than scholarly societies or academic journals, was its main arena. However, almost all its thinkers held university positions.
