homophony. A musical term used in contrast to polyphony for music emphasizing vertical layers of sound. Often the main melody is in the highest voice, with other voices providing harmonic accompaniment. Homophonic music, put simply, is music consisting of melody with accompaniment. Learning piano requires working with these two components. Of course, something can be both accompaniment and melody, so it is important to examine the score carefully. Close reading reveals the composer's hidden intentions, offering the pleasure of exploring them. #sound
