The vocal component of Noh is “utai.” Some is chanted by characters such as the shite and waki, and some by the jiutai chorus. Dialogue also has distinctive melodic inflections, and all vocal chanting, including dialogue, is called “utai.” Utai vocal production is based on abdominal breathing, with the chin tucked in and the Adam's apple lowered as the voice is released with the breath. #sound
