Room impulse response (RIR) is an important concept in acoustical engineering, signal processing, and similar fields. It represents the response observed after sound from a source is reflected, scattered, and absorbed within a particular space.
Specifically, RIR is defined as follows: It shows the changes in time and amplitude when a short acoustic signal (impulse) emitted from a sound source reflects off indoor surfaces such as walls, floor, and ceiling, and these reflected sounds are recorded at an observation point (for example, a microphone's position). It is used to evaluate the acoustic characteristics of a particular space, develop acoustic simulations and speech-processing algorithms, and more.
RIR plays an important role in audio-signal-processing applications including recording and reproducing speech and music, noise removal, sound-field rationalization, and speech recognition and synthesis.
