Dartmouth Conference) is the common name of the conference that established artificial intelligence as a field of academic research. It was held from 1956/7 to 81. Organized by John McCarthy, then at Dartmouth College, the conference’s concept itself was conceived with Marvin Minsky, Nathaniel Rochester, Claude Shannon, and others. Its proposal is said to have used the term “Artificial Intelligence” for the first time in human history2.
The conference lasted one month and was basically a venue for brainstorming. 8 weeks had elapsed since mathematicians and computer scientists had taken over the top floor of the building housing Dartmouth College's mathematics department2.
